Tim Burton

There is something about a Tim Burton film, you just know when you see it. More than the dark and whimsical aesthetic he creates, there is a feeling his films emote; an appeal to the imaginative child in all of us. When a collection his work, drawings mostly, was on display recently at the Museum of Modern Art, it drew a varied audience. Naturally there were the youths like Burton was once himself; smart, creative, introverted. But then there were the Midwestern tourists, the European set, a scattering of elderly couples, and of course, lots of children. An art school geek with a dark and fantastical imagination, Tim Burton has managed to transcend the niche of his unique filmmaking style into mass market appeal.

His Distinct Style

With film career highs and lows, most would argue that Tim Burton is at his best in his comfort zone; when he keeps it dark, fantastical and quirky. Films such as Edward Scissorhands, both Batman movies, Sleepy Hallow, and The Nightmare Before Christmas all exhibit these traits. When he moves away from that, the films arguably do not work as well (see Top Tim Burton Films
