Madonna

How do I even begin a guide on Madonna? Not only is she one of the most successful musical artists of all time, she has become a quintessential pop culture icon. It's been nearly 30 years since she rolled around the MTV stage in a wedding dress and the woman is as vibrant and spectacular as ever. She may not be quite as shocking (she ''is'' a mom, of course!), but she still knows how to grab our gaze and keep us mesmerized. I have to be honest and say I question the musical taste, and sanity, of someone who doesn't like at least one Madonna song.

From Like a Virgin to Erotica

Oh 80s Madonna, how we adore you titled album, has a catchy dance hook and the video screams bad fashion (I hope that choreographer was fired.) Regardless of the low budget, though, the song is timeless. Her debut album originally got negative reviews, but critics soon realized that "Holiday" and "Borderline" were just so damn likable. The previous decade's disco mania was a definite inspiration for this dance album. ''Like a Virgin'' catapulted this diva into the spotlight. If you weren't wearing leggings, lace tops, multiple bracelets and crosses, you just weren't cool.  ''True Blue'' marked a period of change for Madonna. She dropped her high pitched voice and learned how to truly use her vocals as an instrument of expression. Stories of love will tug at that heart of yours, but if it's controversy you prefer, don't forget to watch the video for "Like a Prayer." Madonna always loved to shock and awe concerned parents and the early nineties proved that. Madonna went from feeling "like" a virgin to full on dominatrix. If Madonna was pushing boundaries before, she completely tore them down with ''Erotica''. The album explored unconventional sexuality and relationships, leaving no stone unturned. Many said she went too far and her career was over. Oh how wrong those fools were.

Still the Queen of Pop

I guess Madonna got sick of all that leather and bondage gear, because she began to tone it down with albums like ''Bedtime Stories'' and ''Something to Remember'', a collection of ballads. As the grunge era faded away, Madonna realized her priorities in life were changing and so was her style. The days of wearing a cone bra were over. ''Ray of Light'' was inspired by her daughter and her new found passion for Eastern mysticism. It was a huge success and won four Grammy Awards. ''Music'' continued the electronic feel of the last album mixed with European dance. Sadly ''American Life'' was not a success. Despite its attempt to be political, sometimes you have to stick with what you know. And she did just that with ''Confessions On a Dance Floor''. For me, nothing will ever top hits like "Vogue" or "Material Girl," but she still has that uncanny ability to make those ohcatchy songs.
