Since the start of her music career in the 1960s, Barbra Streisand has recorded over 35 Albums, was highly prominent on the pop charts in the 70's and 80's, and has been named the most successful female singer in America (only Elvis Presley and The Beatles have sold more albums). Her music ranges in style from Classical to Pop, with her famous rendition of Broadway favorites somewhere in between. Judy Garland once referred to her as "the last great belter," and whether or not she's the last, she is certainly great. Her powerful voice has inspired and entertained her listeners for decades and has made her one of America's classic, most successful pop stars.
Early Career
When Streisand started off, her albums were often composed of classic renditions of theater and cabaret songs. Although her voice shone through and impressed many listeners, these albums were very safe for Barbra, and didn't stretch, challenge, and showcase her as much as they could. Regardless, the albums were a hit, and are still wonderful examples of Streisand's legendary vocal talent.

Transition Into Pop
Starting in 1968, Streisand began experimenting with more contemporary styles of music. Abandoning show tunes almost entirely (an act which devastated many of her fans), she began to play with the genres of rock and pop music. Like many great singers at her time, rock music didn't suit Barbra's voice or style, but pop music complimented her voice perfectly and enabled her to transition into the world of mainstream music. Her first pop and ballad album, ''The Stoney End'', was very successful and led the way to some of Barbra's greatest hits. During the 70's, many of her songs were ranked first or second on the pop charts for weeks at a time. Teaming up with artists like Neil Diamond and Donna Summer to record overwhelmingly popular songs like ''You Don't Bring Me Flowers'' and ''No More Tears ''eventually landed Streisand the title of the most successful American female singer.
